MOBILITY HUBS

We’ve mentioned mobility hubs a few times now, but what are they [4]? At its simplest, a hub is a point at which different modes of transportation converge: a railroad station, an airport, a parking garage or some other central location. Hubs are crucial to both intermodal and multimodal mobility because they enable travellers to switch modes quickly and easily. After all, that’s the bedrock of a transportation system – easy interchange, clear signage, and self-explanatory zoning. Passengers need to be able to find their way around effortlessly, so the entire architecture of a mobility hub needs to be geared to smooth transitions. And appropriate retail is part of that. We’ve all wanted to grab a hot drink and a newspaper on our way from e-bike to train.

But mobility hubs are much more. They now include charging points for electric cars and a full-service bike and scooter repair business. And they are also where people gather in cafés, restaurants, and waiting areas. Hubs are places to meet friends or business contacts, to kill time, to see and be seen, to hang out, and to study. With their downtown locations, railroad stations would make ideal mobility hubs, and Figs. 4.7 and 4.8 illustrate how this could work.
